Former Mt. Auburn Postmistress Dorothy Sallee story TODAY at the Palace

Dorothy Salle, at her home in Mt. Auburn, 1983      Dorothy Sallee, born Dorothy Wiegand, from Mt. Auburn, was the youngest of the ten women, age 79 when interviewed.  She had interesting stories to tell about her first husband (Pollock) working on the railroad, and the hardships they and the children endured.  Dorothy later served as a telephone operator when the farms were all on party lines, and then served as Post Mistress of Mt.

PEO Chapter HG to meet March 28

       PEO Chapter HG will meet Monday, March 28th at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Nancy Good.  Betsy Hadley will present the program and Pat Beatty will be co-hostess.

Nira Primmer Geiger also featured at Friday's Palace event

 Nira (Primmer) Geiger, Vinton, in her home 1983 Celebrate Women's History month: Friday, March 25 free showing of Her Own Story: A Montage of Benton County Women Palace Theater, Vinton 4:30 - 5:15pm The Vinton Branch of the American Association of University Women selected and interviewed ten Benton County women on audio tape 25 years ago.

Frieda Geiken: Story of discrimination against German Americans during WWI

Frieda Geiken 1983, at her home in Vinton Freida Geiken, born Freida Brehm, had many stories to tell about the hardships of growing up on a farm outside Vinton, and about the early days of farming with her husband and raising a family.  She also told about the discrimination her family endured during World War I, as they had come from Germany.  Freida died in 1998 at age 103.

Allegra (Grady)Schueler, one of the featured women in Palace presentation

Allegra Many remember Van Horne's Allegra (Grady)Schueler as one of Benton County's most expert historians. She could tell dozens of stories about Benton County early in the last century, but her best stories were personal memories of her own experiences. She remembered her family's first car arriving in a box, ready to be assembled and stored in a new addition to the family home, a garage.

CP Library Friends Sponsors Free Poetry Workshop Mar. 28

                  To kick off the second annual Friends of the Center Point Library Spring Gala and poetry writing contest Friends is sponsoring a free poetry writing clinic at the Library on Monday, Mar. 28, at 6:30 p.m.                 Local poet Paul Wood will coach hopeful writers of all ages in the fundamentals of poetry.

Blessed Hope to host ecumenical worship service

Sunday, March 20th @ 6 p.m., Blessed Hope Church will be hosting an ecumenical worship service. The church is located at 1509 M Ave. (behind Theisen's) Folks from other area churches will also be participating.  The music ranges from old time hymns to contemporary Christian music. Everyone is welcome!  

Donkey Basketball arriving

Join six teams from the Vinton-Shellsburg area as they ride comically trained donkeys in a quest to become the donkey dribbling champions! Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door. (Tickets are available at Cedar Valley Bank, Farmers Savings Bank, USA Communications in Shellsburg and all the School Offices in Vinton.) Doors open at 6pm, games start at 7pm.
