IWALK group to discuss safe routes to VS schools, Aug. 24

  For the last year, Benton County Public Health and Vinton-Shellsburg community members have been working diligently to collect valuable data to address safety concerns in our community through a project called I-WALK, an Iowa Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program.  Please join us for a one-hour presentation addressing barriers and opportunities identified and recommendations for our community to become a safer place for people of all ages.

  With the recent increases seen in farmland values, many people are asking "Can I afford to spend $8,000/acre for farmland?"  Should I sell or purchase farmland at the present high prices?  Making farmland purchase or sale decisions are difficult by the nature of the dollars involved but are extremely difficult during periods of volatile prices for corn, soybeans, and input cost.

Iowa State Fair, Governor's Office Launch Iowa State Fair Mobile Website

  A new Iowa State Fair mobile website will increase Iowans' access to information about the Fair. "Nothing Compares" to the Iowa State Fair, set August 11-21. The touch-friendly mobile website will offer many of the Fair's website features. Developed in partnership with the Governor's Office and Iowa Interactive, the mobile site will provide information on the Fair's daily schedule, entertainment, food vendors and attractions, in addition to offering a Fairgrounds map and general Fair information.

2011 Iowa State Fair to End on an Entertaining Note

  The 2011 Iowa State Fair is set to end on a high note on Extreme Sunday, August 21, with a rocking Grandstand show, an attempt to break a world record and a full day of free entertainment. Plus, Fairgoers can take advantage of half-price gate admission and free parking for carloads of five or more in the North Lot all day until 9 p.m.

Farmers Market Salsa Contest this Thursday

  The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to announce its’ annual Salsa Contest of the Vinton Farmers Market is this coming Thursday, August 11th.  The market is held at the Vinton Rail Road Depot at 612 2nd Avenue from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays. This contest is for all of you to make your own salsa from scratch and preferably vegetables from our Vinton Farmers market or your own garden.

Dirt Action Rumbles into the Iowa State Fair

  "Nothing Compares" to the speed, action and adrenaline of track events at the Iowa State Fair. The Fair will play host to the thunder and roar of races, tractor and truck pulls and demolition derby on the half-mile dirt track during the Fair's August 11-21 run. Kicking off track events at the Fair, the Deery Brothers Summer Series for Late Models speeds into the Grandstand on Monday, August 15.

Iowa's Largest Art Show Joins Butter Cow Celebration at the Iowa State Fair

  The Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center will be bursting with fine art at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Home to Iowa's largest art show, the Cultural Center features sand sculptures, art activities, demonstrations and much more. As the Fair celebrates 100 years of the Butter Cow, art throughout the Cultural Center will pay tribute to Iowa's buttery icon August 11-21.
