Iowa lakes and rivers will soon be busy with paddlers, boaters, swimmers and people wading to search for fossils, rocks and driftwood or to clean up litter.Rivers are dynamic systems that change with high flows and have obstacles hidden just beneath the water surface. Iowa rivers can have sudden drop-offs, holes, submerged shelves, foot holds and rock ledges.
Urbana Officially terminates Police Chief
The Urbana City Council voted to terminate the Police Chief, Joshua Baker. Baker had been on paid leave since April of 2024, just over a year ago. In a 3 to 2 vote, the council fired Baker without cause. Baker filed a lawsuit against the city, city clerk and mayor last June. The lawsuit claims there was an abuse of power by the mayor and city clerk and he is alleging that they had withheld his wages while launching an unwarranted investigation. Notification to the CommunityOpen Sites and Closed Enrolled (Needy area)Vinton-Shellsburg CSD is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), age or disability, and there will be no discrimination during the course of meal service.
SACG upgrades Shellsburg's Pavilion with new Picnic Tables
The Shellsburg Area Community Group’s latest effort to bring an upgrade to the City Park was very successful. The goal was to replace the worn and unattractive picnic tables in the frequently used park pavilion. SACG's Parks Planning Committee undertook the task of researching, fund-raising, purchasing and assembling ten new tables. City officials gave approval for selecting tables made with recycled plastic.

4th St. Diner in Need of an upright Freezer ASAP
UPDATE!We were fortunate to have several people reach out to us and we received a brand new freezer today. Simply amazing! I am overwhelmed with the positive support of the community members and your readers. We really appreciate it. —-The 4th St. Diner is in desperate need of an upright freezer to replace one that just died. If any readers have one in good working condition we would be interested in accepting it as a donation.
Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Plant Sale Grows Over $8,500 for Ag Program

With strong support from the greenhouse management class, students grew and sold a wide range of flowers, vegetables, hanging baskets, succulents, and even handmade wooden planter boxes built by Ag students.

Virginia Gay Hospital proudly celebrated the commitment and dedication of its staff during the 2025 Annual Employee Awards Banquet, held at the Vinton Country Club on Wednesday evening. The event brought together staff, family, and leadership to recognize employees who have reached milestone anniversaries in their service to the hospital and community. Vinton-Shellsburg High School Gym was a place of celebration on Sunday for the Class of 2025. The high school band played "Pomp and Circumstance: as the graduates filed in. There was a common theme. As they began their walk down the aisle, each graduate scanned the crowd looking for the ones that brought them to this place. As soon as their eyes connected, a smile would break out across the face of the one in the cap and gown.
