Stormin Vikes on to State

Bitter cold temperatures and blizzards didn’t slow them down.  Altered workouts and lost pool time due to a pandemic couldn’t either.  Nor did having to face some of the toughest competition in the State in a single-class sport.  On Saturday, the Stormin’ Vikings overcame all of these obstacles as they punched their ticket to the State meet in four events at the District Swim Meet in Dubuque.

VSU Conference Swim Meet

The weather couldn’t hold down the Stormin’ Vikings swim team who had to wait until Monday to get their half of the Conference Meet in last night in Williamsburg.  The other four teams in the Conference had already gotten their meet in at Boone on Saturday. The team turned is a strong performance despite some adversity to capture with in the Conference, narrowly missing second by a mere 12 points.

Viking wrestlers grab 2nd at North Tama Invitational

Aldin Swanson takes the title! TRAER -- The Vinton-Shellsburg Viking wrestlers kept up their hot streak Saturday. Coming on the heels of their double-dual meet sweep of Center Point-Urbana and Benton Community on Thursday, the Vikes won three individual titles, added three runner-up finishes and took second-place team honors at the North Tama Invitational.Aldin Swanson won the 106-pound championship, while 132-pounder Damon Swenson and 138-pounder Brady Ortner picked up titles as well.

It felt like beginnings of a State wrestling tourament anyway: Weigh-ins done, eight mats laid out across the arena floor, scoreboards lit up, and while the fans had yet to admitted, the teams were filtering out from the locker rooms to begin warming-up. And the 10-members of the Vinton-Shellsburg's team, their managers and one assistant coach -- after all the selfies and team pictures were taken -- circled up begin getting loose.

Four Vikettes still in the medal hunt at Girls State wrestling

CORALVILLE — It was a day to remember, with another day to come. A 10-woman contingent of Vinton-Shellburg Vikette wrestlers rolled into Coralville's shiny new Xtream Arena for the 2021 Iowa Wrestlers and Coaches Association Girls' State Wrestling Tournament, as four of the 10 remain alive going into Saturday morning's action.Freshman 106-pounder Bree Swenson, junior 138-pounder Rachel Bane and senior 145-pounder Geordyn Webster are going to battling in the consolation round, while junior -- and returning State placewinner -- 145-pounder Bailey Weeks will kick off the day for the Black & Gold in the championship bracket quarterfinals.

Vikings roll past Oelwein, South Tama

VINTON -- Coach Joe Johnson's Vinton-Shellsburg basketball team, picked up a pair of blow-out wins this week.Monday night, the Vikings (6-8 on the year) drilled the Oelwein Huskies, 67-41, then went off to Tama on Tuesday to blast South Tama, 67-46.Monday night the Vikings rode the hot hand of senior sharpshooter Ryan Moore. Moore converted on six of eight three-point attempts to lead the Vikings 18 points.

Stormin' Vikings sink Williamsburg

Huge win last night.  We swam well winning all but one event.  Meet sheet attached.  Great send-off for our seniors.  We moved some guys around to some different events and had some great performances even in events they normally didn’t swim.Isaac Allsup [st] the school/pool record for the odd-distance 160 yard medley relay.

Vikettes roll past South Tama, 70-18

Brylee Bruce drives for two of her game-high 14 points Tuesday night VINTON -- It was a nearly perfect night at Garrison Fieldhouse. Everyone scored and the 12th-rated Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes moved to 13-2 for the season with a 70-18 blowout of South Tama Tuesday night.The outcome was never in doubt. The Vikettes were up 21-4 after one period and pushed the lead to 43-9 at the half, paced by 12 first half points from sophomore Brylee Bruce.

Vinton puts Independence in the gutter

Girls Varsity bowling team takes on Independence winning 2652 pins over Independence 2298 Tonight we competed against Independence at home and were victorious for both girls and boys. I see such great things being done by these teams.  The kids continue to improve and are receptive to change and being the best they can. Below is the information for each team. Our varsity girls team has really been coming on strong. Junior Anna Becker showcased her talent tonight shooting a great 253 game and a 418 series.
