The Atkins Fire Department put out a news release concerning an accident on Highway 30 on Monday.
It reads as follows:
On Monday, April 6 at 6:20 p.m. the Atkins Fire Department was dispatched along with the Benton County sheriff's Office and Iowa State Patrol to a report of a car accidenet on Highway 30 just west of the 32nd Ave. intersection.
A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado and 2026 Buick Regal were both traveling in the eastbound lanes hen the Chevrolet rear-ended the Buick. This caused the Buick to leave the roadway and land in the south ditch. The driver of the Chevrolet lost control, went through the median and rolled several times. The Chevrolet ended up on the north shoulder of the westbound lanes.
The driver of the Chevrolet died and their name is being withheld at this time.
The crash report indicates that a Ricardo Garcia-Garcia of Kansas City, Kansas, was driving the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when the crash happened. The accident was reported at approximately 6:18 p.m. occuring on Highway 30 at 32nd Avenue, south of Atkins.
Garcia-Garcia, rear ended the 2026 Regal Buick, driven by Brunis Alcy, 39, of Cedar Rapids. Both vehicles were headed east in the left lane of Highway 30. Alcy lost control of his vehicle and went into a ditch. Garcia-Garcia’s pickup ran into the median and rolled over several times.
Garcia died on the scene, Alcy was not injured.
