Four V-S students participated in the State Coed Golf Tournament at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella on Tuesday. This is a very challenging course that is difficult to walk; it is lengthy and hilly. There are many lateral hazards and sand bunkers; the rough and no mow areas were exceedingly thick and long. The greens are undulating and the pin placements were tricky. The meet was played in very wet conditions (not unusual this spring!); it was a downpour most of the first nine holes of play.
Benton Community and V-S were two of the smallest schools in our 2A division; for this tournament there are only two divisions, 1A and 2A. This is an 18 hole alternate shot event. The boys teed off on odd holes, the girls on even holes. Natalie Ketchen and Daniel Janssen shot 106. Erin Randall and Dylan Rippel shot 89; this is the third year Erin and Dylan have partnered for this alternate shot event. Medals were awarded the first ten places; Erin and Dylan finished at 14th overall. I was very proud of our participants. They met the challenges of weather and course conditions and represented V-S well. It was the last high school golf event for Ms Ketchen and Ms Randall. Erin will play in the Girls State Junior Golf Tournament at Ottumwa next Tuesday and Wednesday. Complete results can be found on the IGHSAU website.
