Sports : Vikettes 4 x 100 places fifth at State Track; boys barely miss medal in 4 x 200

The Vinton-Shellsburg girls 4 x 100 relay team finished in fifth place Saturday in the 3A finals at the State Track Meet.

The team consisting of Ashley Boyer, Cheyenne Barnes, Erika Hammar and Shelby Beyer turned in the fourth-fastest 3A qualifying time on Friday, finishing in 50.86 seconds. They were just .15 second slower on Saturday, finishing in 51.01 seconds.

The same four girls finished in 12th place in the 4 x 200 relay, with a time of 1:48.77.

In other girls events, Cheyenne Barnes finished 12th and Shelby Beyer 15th in the preliminaries for the 100M dash. Barnes finished in 13.11 seconds; Beyer in 13.21.

Erika Hammar finished 13th in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 2 inches.

Wet weather was a factor; there was a rain delay, and when events resumed, the athletes dealt with wet conditions.

Boys results

The Vikings, who set a school record by qualifying 12 events for State, barely missed earning a medal in the 4 x 200 relay, finishing ninth with a time of 1:32.06, just .23 seconds behind eighth place Washington. Central Clinton's team set a new state record in that event with a time of 1:28.40. The V-S 4 x 200 team includes David Ervin, Logan Williams, Brian Fischer and Jason Kirk.

In other events completed by Friday afternoon:

*The 4 x 100 team of David Ervin, Logan Williams, Darrin Charlier and Jason Kirk finished 14th with a time of 44.94;

* The 4 x 800 team consisting of Travis Libbert, Cory Mayhew, Max Griffith and Logan Williams finished 20th with a time of 8:31.90.
* The Distance Medley Relay team of Gunner Tranel, Brian Fishcher, Travis Libbert and Cory Mayhew finished 21st with a time of 3:45:61.

* The 4 x 400 team finished 24th in prelminaries with a time of 3:39.43. That team included Jason Kirk, Travis Libbert, Logan Williams and David Ervin.

* The Shuttle Hurdle Relay team (Andy Roster, Matt Pettengill, David Richter and Nolan Edwards) finished 12th with a time of 1:01:73. * David Ervin finished 22nd in the 100M dash with a time of 11.92 seconds. * Jason Kirk finished 15th in the 200M event with a time of 23.31 seconds.

* Chase Overton, one of only two freshmen among 3A qualifiers in the 400M run, finished 18th with a time of 53.34 seconds.

* Kelyn Rickels tied for 15th in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches.

* Andy Roster finished in 22nd place in the long jump, with a distance of 18 feet, 3.5 inches.

* Wyatt Lyons finished 24th in the 1600 M run, with a time of 4:58.84.
