The Vinton-Shellsburg grinders had their homecoming celebration painfully spoiled Friday night.
After piling up an early three touchdown lead, the Vikings ended up on the short end of a 28-27 loss at the hands of the Nevada Cubs in the District opener for both teams.
Quarterback Brooks Erickson scored on one-yard runs in the first and second quarter to give the Vikes (now 2-3 on the season) an early 14-0 lead. Elijah Kalous added an 11-yard TD run and the Vikings were up 21-0.
But Nevada added a touchdown just before the half to cut the lead to 21-7 and right after the half the roof caved in on the home team.
On the Vikings’ second offensive play a bad snap rolled out of the end zone for a safety that made it 21-9. Just four plays after the ensuing free kick the Cubs scored another TD to make 21-16. The after a Viking punt Nevada drove for another TD. The two-point conversion failed, but the Cubs led 22-21 late in the third quarter.
The Vikings retook the lead early in the fourth quarter when Erickson hooked up with Jose Wilson on a 45-yard touchdown. The two-pointer failed, but the Vikings were back on top 27-22, only to have the Cubs retake the lead 28-27.
Erickson completed four of 11 passes for 107 yards and one TD. He also carried eight times for 42 yards and a pair of scores. Kalous led the Vikings in rushing with nine carries for 76 yards. Wilson added 71 yards on 11 carries on the ground and snagged two passes for 75 yards.
