The Vinton-Shellsburg Viking sophomores begin their season with a 2-1 record.
Coach Dave Boisen shared the following summary with Vinton Today:
Week 1: VS 36, BC 0
The Benton Community game in Vinton was 36 – 0, Vinton Shellsburg. We played well on special teams and had a great game on defense. We had some big plays from some good players.
This win, however, came with some big loses, too. Daniel Ervin suffered a knee injury, Aaron Burke had a concussion, and we had one sophomore get moved up to the varsity early in the week.
Week 2: STC19, VS 6
Week 2 with STCdidn't get off to a good start.
We had one more sophomore get moved to the varsity and we lost Kelyn Rickels too a broken hand early in the week.
The kids did a great job over coming the short week and being short some teammates.
The game was on Thursday night in Toledoand we got off to a slow start. We were down at half time 7 to 6. We gave up a big play in the third to be down 13-6. We made some great efforts to get ourselves in good position but could not punch in the ball. We gave up a late td in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for STC. Final score: STC19-VS 6.
Week 3: VS 8, Maquoketa 7
Week 3 was a defensive battle with Maquoketa. We were down in the fourth and our offense was able to maintain a great drive with a big score, and with the big 2 point conversion to take the lead. The boys had a great defensive stand to end the game with a pick in the endzone to seal the deal. Final Score: VS 8, M 7.
This week, the Vikings play at Western Dubuque.
