In their last game in a Viking uniform, the Vinton-Shellsburg senior football players led their team to victory, scoring all six touchdowns in the 38-22 Viking victory at Crestwood.
Senior QB Jordan Womochil completed six of nine passes for 119 yards and one touchdown, a 16-yard toss to classmate Nick Hyland. Jordan also ran the ball 17 times for 120 yards.
Hyland’s final game was one of his best. He led the Vikes in both receiving yards (76, on two catches, a 60-yarder and that 16-yard touchdown) and rushing yards (123 on 17 attempts). Hyland also contributed to the win with a fumble recovery and a 41-yard punt return.
Joel Barnes scored two of the Viking touchdowns in his final game for V-S.
Each of the Viking senior kickers, Kyle Jorgensen and Austin Bohnsack, added 1 to the Vikings’ final tally with successful PAT kick attempts.
After the game, played in a continual drizzle on the night which also featured the longest (two-hour, one way) road trip, the seniors led the team in singing the V-S Fight Song.
The Vikings ended their season at 3-6 overall, and 2-4 in district games. Seven of the teams they played advanced to the play-offs, which begin tonight.
After playing the same teams in the same order for the past two years in a row, the Vikings will have a new district line-up which is likely to include new opponents next year. The Iowa High School Athletic Association will announce those districts early in 2016.
