Vinton-Shellsburg senior Kathleen Steffen had been looking for an opportunity to play volleyball on the college level.
DMACC coach Patty Harrison had been looking for scrappy setters whose intensity makes them go after the ball on every play.
The two found themselves recently, and on Tuesday, Kathleen signed her letter of intent to play college for the next two years at Des Moines Area Community College.
“She came up to me after a tournament and said she had an offer for me,” said Kathleen, the daughter of Kirk and Kelly Steffen of Shellsburg.
Vikette volleyball coach Michelle Ruess joined the Steffens and coach Harrison at the signing in the conference room at VSHS.
At DMACC, Kathleen will trade the black and gold she’s been wearing the past four years for the blue and white of the team which calls itself the Bears.
In her senior season, Kathleen led the team in serving aces, as well as being among team leaders for sets.
Coach Harrison said she is impressed with Kathleen's intensity and her energy on the court.
