A season of significant improvement continued Saturday as the Viking swim team travelled to Decorah to participate in the first North Central Swim Conference (NCSC) Meet. Vinton-Shellsburg finished fifth in the six team meet won handily by Decorah.

The top Viking performances on the day included relay finishes of 7th in the 200 Free Relay (Ryan Levis, Caleb Kruckenburg, Matt Upmeyer and Anthony Dickerson), 8th in the 200 Medley Relay (Upmeyer, Levis, Dickerson and Jonah Blix) and 8th in the 400 Free Relay (Kruckenburg, Blix, Upmeyer and Levis).

In individual events, Anthony Dickerson (100 Free) and Ryan Levis (100 Breast) each recorded 9th place finishes. Other Viking swimmers scoring individual team points included Matt Upmeyer and Dickerson (50 Free), Kyle Schemmel (200 Free and 500 Free), Dylan Geater (200 Free), Ben Eden (200 Individual Medley), Lewis Williams (500 Free) and Tyler Hekel and Alex Dick (100 Back).

But the continuing big story was once again the solid time drops registered. Of the 42 Viking swims Saturday, 30 resulted in new personal best times. Leading the field were Caleb Kruckenburg and Alex Dick with four each. Matt Upmeyer, Jonah Blix, Ben Eden, Kyle Schemmel and Dylan Geater each set three new records.

Senior Jordan Evans, who was unable to compete due to an honor choir commitment, was named to the NCSC all-academic team.

The NCSC is comprised of teams from around the eastern half of the state whose primary conferences do not hold a conference meet. Teams at this inaugural event included host Decorah, Boone, Grinnell, Newton and Oskaloosa. The meet location will rotate annually among the participants with next years’ meet scheduled for Grinnell. Vinton-Shellsburg remains undefeated in WAMAC play during this century.

The Vikings next travel to Cedar Falls for the district meet Saturday at 12:30 at Holmes Middle School pool. Participants will be Cedar Falls, Waterloo East and West, Decorah, Marshalltown, Mason City and Grinnell.
