After each Vinton-Shellsburg home football victory, the players shake hands with the opposing players, then run to ring the Victory Bell near the north end zone. That happened after the freshmen team's 16-0 victory, and again after the varsity's 33-22 win over Crestwood.

But it happened a third time, on Friday.

Here's why:

As the game's final minutes ticked away, as the Vikings had the ball and a 12-point lead, the crowd suddenly hushed as VS quarterback Jordon Womochil was injured. The Vikings took a knee near the injured QB as the audience watched the medical staff attend to his injuries.

Womochil had suffered an injury known as a hip pointer, a bruising of the tip of the pelvis. While not usually a serious injury, a hip pointer is among the most excruciating.

Womochil remained on his back for several moments, before being escorted to the bench. Sophomore Tyler Bartz finished the game at QB.

After the game, as his teammates rang the bell, Womochil limped toward the equipment shed where the team gathers after its contests. Vikings who had just finished ringing the bell saw him heading toward them, holding ice on his left hip. They then escorted the QB to the bell and helped him ring it one more time.
