Nobody named Murphy was on the roster during the Vinton-Shellsburg district football opener against Charles City, but Murphy's law seemed to rule over the Vikings in a 36-10 loss in the first contest between the two schools in many years.

Just about everything went wrong for the Vikings, where missed tackles and penalties on 4th downs helped keep Comet drives alive. The Vikings only managed one late touchdown, a 10-yard run by sophomore Tanner Davis. Senior kicker Anthony Dickerson kicked his first career field goal in the first quarter to make the score 6-3.

The Vikes completed just 4 of 11 passes for 43 yards and one interception. The Vikings did gain 282 yards rushing, with 131 coming from Nick Hyland.

The Vikings travel to West Delaware next Friday before returning home to play Independence in their Homecoming game. West Delaware is undefeated, and beat Waverly-Shell Rock, 29-18. Both were rated in the top five among Class 3A schools going into Friday's contest.

The Viking freshmen, however, won their game, 44-6, behind many big plays on both offense and defense.
