Mara Jessen led all golfers, shooting a 47 at the Wildcat on Thursday, April 10, in the Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team home opener.
Benton Community edged the Vikettes, 203-207, but two of the top three scorers were Vikettes. Lauren Tandy and Bobcat Sidney Volz were tied at 48.
"It was good to get our first meet in after two were postponed due to weather and course conditions," said Coach Janet Woodhouse. "There were lots of nerves tonight because all varsity ladies played in positions that were unfamiliar, but the team responded well. Mara Jessen played in the number one position for the first time and was medalist!"
Coach Woodhouse also stated, "Most of the V-S team had putting problems but Lauren Tandy had only 14 putts which is excellent. Jessie Noren had 17 and a fine round of 49. This was our JV ladies first ever high school golf competition and junior Jessie Noren carded a strong 49."
