The Mercy Rule was in effect throughout the second half as the Vinton-Shellsburg freshman football team built a big lead early at Oelwein. The Vikings led by 36 at the half, 44-8. Under the Mercy Rule, the clock runs without stopping if one team leads by 35 or more in the second half.

Rookie Coach Tony Stenberg and the ninth graders are now 3-0, having outscored their opponents by a total margin of 100-30.

The freshmen travel to Western Dubuque tonight since Friday's schedule includes the traditional sophomore game.

Highlights from VS/Oelwein game:

Tanner Davis led the team with 4 first half touchdowns. Tyler Bartz added one rushing touchdown as well as one through the air to Jared Thompson. Dylan Wagner led the defensive charge with an interception. "The guys came out and played hard from the beginning, which allowed us to take control of the game early on," said Stenberg. "We have continued to improve from week to week but need to keep that going with no preparation before playing at Western Dubuque Monday at 6 p.m."
