Lebeda, Burroughs lead Red Cedar Shooters at State Trap Shooting event

The VSHS Red Cedar Shooters placed third in their second season. The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap Team competed at the Iowa State Trap Championships at the Cedar Falls Gun Club on Saturday June 5th.     This year, teams from 75 schools participated with 527 individuals competing on 96 five member squads.   Each shooter shot 100 targets:  50 from the 16yd distance and 50 from the 19yd distance.

Pitching gems for Noren, Seaton lead Vikings, Vikettes to victory at CPU

Lindsey Noren and Kody Seaton led V-S to victory with complete games at CPU Monday night. Lindsey Noren pitched the Vikettes to victory in Game 1 at Center Point, where V-S defeated CPU, 3-2 in the opener of a varsity double header. At the same time, Kody Seaton baffled CPU batters as the Vikings scored a 12-2 5-inning win.  But CPU won both Game 2 contests, with the girls winning 8-2 and the boys winning 6-3.

Comeback bid fails as Vikings lose to Monticello 11-8 at Veterans Stadium

Starting pitcher Gunner Tranel is introduced as Vikings play at Veterans Stadium Friday. The Vinton-Shellburg baseball team came up short in its attempt for another come-from-behind win on Friday night.  In a varsity game against Monticello, the Vikings were down 11-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. They loaded the bases, but were unable to score.  The loss was just the Vikings' second of the season.

Kositzky gets first career feature win in Vinton

Bill Whalen Jr. Vinton Sport Compact Winner Rainy weather held off long enough for the races to continue in Vinton Sunday, June 6. Bill Whalen won the Sport Compact Feature. Austin Kaplin was one Sport Modified Feature winner. Kent Kositzky won his first career feature in the othe Sport Mod feature. Jeff Mueller won the stock car feature and celebrated with his parents in Victory Lane.

Vikettes slay Knights, 6-0; get back to .500 mark

Katie Henderson slides in safely under the tag for one of her three steals Saturday. LA PORTE CITY – The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes put together another solid performance Saturday night, getting back to the .500 mark on the season with a 6-0 victory over the Union Knights. The night was planned as a doubleheader, a deluge between games washed out the nightcap. The teams hope to make up the game later in the season.

Vikette bats back freshman pitcher Maddie Cornell, batter Anamosa, 3-1

Freshman Maddie Cornell held Anamosa to one run as the Vikettes win on the road, 3-1 at Anamosa. ANAMOSA – It wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t bad. Coach Bari Parrott’s Vinton-Shellsburg softball team ended a three-game losing streak, downing Anamosa, 3-1 in a WaMaC Conference road contest. The Vikettes got another solid performance from freshman hurler Maddie Cornell on the night, and backed the rookie with a 10-hit attack.

Viking boys come from behind again, sweep Anamosa 4-2 and 10-9

Vikings celebrate at home plate after Clint Ferguson's 2-run homer in inning 5 of Game 2. All the players on the V-S Vikings baseball team members were born after the original "Cardiac Kids," the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, which won the World Series by managing to win some very close games.  But the Vikings have scratched and clawed their way to an 8-1 beginning and are unbeaten and at the top of the WaMaC standings after several come-from-behind or extra-inning victories.

Vikettes fight back, but lose to W Dubuque in extra innings, 11-5

VINTON – For a single WaMaC Conference softball game last night, the battle at Thole Field between Coach Bari Parrott’s Vikettes (2-4, 1-4 in the WaMaC), and Western Dubuque was actually three games. There was the first two innings, which saw the visiting Bobcats jump out to a 5-1 lead. Then there were the next five, which saw the Vikettes back shutout the pitching of reliever Maddie Cornell by eking out fourth runs – including two in a dramatic seventh inning – to tie the game.

Vikings win two the hard way; come from behind twice to sweep Benton

Darrin Charlier pictched for the Vikings in Game 2. The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team improved its record to 6-1 Monday night with a sweep of Benton Community in Vinton. But the Vikings did it the hard way, falling behind in both games. Three walks followed by a double and a home run gave Benton a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning of the first game. But the Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and won it on a bases-loaded squeeze bunt single by Phillip Close in the bottom of the seventh.
