Viking wrestlers to host quadrangular meet Tuesday

There will be another home wrestling meet Tuesday night for the Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers. The even is a quadrangular with Iowa Valley, Mid-Prairie and Midland.  It takes place at the Middle School at begins at 6 p.m.

Little Vikes team places second at Alburnett

The Little Vikes earned many trophies and second place as a team at Alburnett Friday. On Friday evening 16 local young wrestlers headed over to Alburnett.  Several from Vinton-Shellsburg earned trophies, including: Gabe Sanders, 1st place; Brady Ortner, 2nd place; Cooper Sanders, 2nd; and Austin Kemp, 4th .  The V-S Little Vikes Wrestling Club brought home 2nd & 3rd place team trophies from the event.

Red Cedar Shooters look forward to 2012 season

The Red Cedar Shooters hope to bring home a 2012 State Trophy.      After their third place finish at the state meet in 2011, the members of the Red Cedar Shooters, the Vinton-Shellsburg high school trap team, are looking forward to the 2012 season.      Coach Brendan Knudtson, who helped organize the team two years ago, has moved on to Postville, where is is now a principal.

Vikings defeat Waterloo East but falls to Decorah

  On Thursday night in Waterloo, the Vikings faced familiar foes Decorah and Waterloo East.  The Vikings convincingly defeated East while falling to Decorah.  As the last meet in a full-sized pool before districts, the Vikings began their tune-up for the post-season with another strong showing, winning three individual events and showing continued significant improvement across the line-up.

Wrestlers host Benton, CCA

Brandon Geiger, 152 Benton Community and Clear Creek-Amana wrestlers came to Vinton Thursday night. The Vikings, with several open weight classes, lost the team scores but recorded several individual wins.  Ryan Webster (160), Riley Hopkins (145) Nathan Merchant (132) and Michael Neal (126) recorded pins during the Vikings' dual vs. CCA. The Vikings lost the team score 40-27, with 30 of the points for CCA coming via forfeit.

Wrestling meet to include Post Prom raffle

The Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling team has a home meet, tonight, Thursday, January 19, at 6 p.m. at the VS high school. They will dual with Benton Community and CCA. There will be freebies given to some lucky audience members as well as a raffle. The Post Prom 2012 Committee will be displaying and selling raffle tickets to raffle off 5 baskets filled with at least $50 worth of goodies which will include sporting events tickets to Iowa, ISU & UNI upcoming games.

Area players to compete in weekend hockey tournament

  The Cedar Rapids Hockey Association (CRHA) will host a 200-player tournament Friday, Jan. 20 through Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Attendance is free, and spectators are invited to cheer on kids age 9-11 as they play. Vinton resident Hayden Rast (#22), son of Heather and Scott Rast, plays Right Wing on the Jr. RoughRiders Squirt 1 team.

Lions, volunteers help with Little Vikes Wrestling; winners listed

Ref Dick McKenna watches a wrestler go for a pin.   The annual Little Vike Wrestling Tournament brought 103 wrestlers, grades k-8, and their families to the Vinton-Shellsburg mats Sunday for the annual Lions/VPRD fundraiser.  Organizer Don Weidman said the event was smaller than last year by about 35 wrestlers, probably due to competing meets caused by shortening the season this year, but he said the meet was successful for the participants and the fundraisers.

District changes mean new football foes for Vikings

Each Friday of the 2011 high school football season found the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings playing the same team during the same week of the season as they played in 2010. But for the Vikings and most other high school teams, 2012 brings many new district opponents. It's going to be tough, and fun, says Viking Head Coach Patrick Farley. Vinton-Shellsburg will now be in Class 3A, District 5, along with Crestood, Cresco; Decorah; Epworth, Western Dubuque; Independence; Oelwein; and West Delaware.

PACK THE POOL

  Tuesday evening beginning at 4:45 the Viking swim team will host Waterloo East at the Braille School Pool.  This team began the year with little experience, having only five swimmers returning from last years’ squad.  But they have made significant improvement and are looking forward to the opportunity to show folks what they can do.
