Dear Editor,

Property rights are one of the most important concerns for Benton County residents—especially for farmers and landowners who depend on their ability to make decisions about their own land.

With recent attention at the state level on the use of eminent domain, this issue feels more relevant than ever. While public safety should always be considered, there are times when decisions affecting private property don’t clearly reflect that priority, leaving many residents with concerns.

Benton County’s Board of Supervisors is currently made up of three Republicans, and property rights have long been a core principle of the Republican Party. At its heart, that principle is simple: individuals should have the freedom to use their property in ways that best serve their needs, within reasonable limits.

However, many residents have expressed concerns about transparency in local decision-making. This becomes especially frustrating when decisions appear to conflict with the county’s own comprehensive plan or ordinances.

Access to information is another challenge. Currently, residents often have to submit written requests to obtain full copies of county ordinances or the comprehensive plan. While some materials are available online, they can be incomplete or difficult to navigate. In 2026, that creates unnecessary barriers for farmers and landowners simply trying to understand what they can and cannot do with their property.

During my time on the Vinton City Council, we worked to make city ordinances available in a searchable, user-friendly format online. This improved transparency saved time, and made it easier for residents to stay informed and involved. Benton County could benefit from a similar approach.

Residents deserve leadership that values transparency and makes it easier—not harder—to stay engaged and informed.

On June 2nd, Benton County Republicans will have the opportunity to choose their next Supervisor. I’m running because I believe my experience and commitment to practical, transparent government can serve our community well.

Sincerely,
Bethany Hantz
Candidate for Benton County Supervisor
