SHELLSBURG:  Kathryn M. Gardemann, 92, died peacefully at the Vinton Lutheran Home on February 20, 2013.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg with Rev. Mark Leckband officiating.Interment will be held at St. Stephen's Cemetery near Atkins.Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton, from 2 to 5 p.m., on Sunday.Kathryn was born March 24, 1920 near Vinton to Niles Verne and Mary (Bowman) Jack and graduated from the Vinton High School..

On February 20, 1941 she was united in marriage to Donald H. C. Gardemann at the former St. Stephen's Lutheran Parsonage near Atkins.She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Zion's Lutheran Women's Missionary League Ladies Guild, Shellsburg American Legion Auxiliary and the Canton Township Ladies.She and Donald lived on the family farm until retirement in 1988 and then moved to Shellsburg where Kathryn resided till the summer of 2010, when she moved to the Vinton Lutheran Home.

She is survived by her five children, Niles (Linda) of Cedar Rapids, Donald Craig (Pat) of Mohave, AZ, Garth (Vicki) of Vinton, Danny (Jackie) of Palo and Beth (Steve) Rathje of Atkins; her 16 grandchildren, Jeff (Shannon) Gardemann, Sherry (Deric) Clyce, Brian (Julie) Gardemann, Stephanie Kinney, Rodney Gardemann, Lori (Chris) Mott, Larry (Becky) Gardemann, Dennis Gardemann, Rhonda Murr, Chad (Liz) Gardemann, Scott (Abbie) Rathje and Holly (Jeremy) Chihak, Eric (Regina) Hale, Danielle (John) Goselin, Andrea (Mark) Olson, Aaron (Kirsten) Buck and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Hazel Senft and her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jack, Dorothy Rinderknecht-Jensen.

      Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald; her daughter-in-law, Dianne Gardemann; three sisters, Virginia Risdon-Muir, Charlotte Harris, Betty Jane Powers; and her brother, Niles Jack.

Kathryn was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who always enjoyed cooking and baking (especially Angel Food Cakes and cookies) for any occasion that came up.Her past time was spent gardening, attending children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's events when able.She also embroidered many tea towels, table clothes and quilts for her family.

Kathryn touched many, was loved by many and will be greatly missed by many.

Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg.
