Gary Oberreuter passed away at his home in Mesa, Arizona on May 31, 2026.
He was born and raised on a farm near Watkins, Iowa in 1944. He lived a full life, enlisting in the army after graduating high school. He received his degree from Iowa State after his military service was concluded, going on to briefly live in Chicago and Denver before returning home to the farm where he was raised to start a family.
An enterprising spirit at heart, he was many things throughout his life; farmer, auctioneer, salesman, and professional tinkerer. After raising four children, he retired to Arizona to be closer to his siblings and feed his adventurous spirit by prospecting for gold.
He is preceded in death by his parents Al and Agnes and his brothers Alan and Richard. He leaves behind his children Cari, Jeremy, Daniel, and Casey, and grandchildren Taylor, Tavan, Evey, and Kyen. Special thanks to Jason Randle, his renter turned neighbor turned friend, who helped watch over him in his last years.
Graveside service is 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2026 at St. Patricks and St. Pauls Cemetery, Watkins, IA.
