VINTON – Eva Elnora Hurst, 85, of Vinton, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton with Pastor Lanette Sue Van officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 21, and one hour prior to services on Monday. Interment will be in the Garrison Cemetery.

Elnora was born April 10, 1926, in Garrison, Iowa, the daughter of Burr W. and Minnie Harwood Williams. She attended school in Garrison and Vinton.

On April 16, 1953, Elnora was united in marriage with Melvin A. “Bud” Hurst in Burlington, Iowa. She worked as a homemaker until Bud’s death on June 8, 1976. She then drove for SEATS and delivered congregate meals, retiring in 1989 after 13 years.

Elnora attended Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton, where she played in the Silver Bells. She was a member of the Navy Mothers. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, spending time with her grandchildren, puzzle books, watching TV, cross-stitching and latch-hooking.

Elnora is survived by five children: Colleen (Dennis) Messick of Newton; Melvin (Anna) Hurst, Jr., Rozella (Raymond) Rouse and Larry (Janet) Hurst, all of Vinton, and Billie Jo (friend David) Murray of Ames; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Velma Downs; and one brother, Lester Williams.

A memorial fund has been established.
