Obituaries : Eva Maria Monaghan

Eva Maria Monaghan, 78, of La Porte City, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Mercy One Medical Center-Waterloo.

Eva was born on May 8, 1947, in Munich, Germany, to Josef and Erika (Shu'tter) Schaedle. Eva graduated from High School in Munich, Germany. At the age of 18, she immigrated to the United States. Eva married Elmer J. Saulsbury on July 11, 1966, in Illiopolis, IL; they later divorced. She later married Richard F. Monaghan on September 28, 2003, in Gonzalez, LA; he preceded her in death on April 19, 2012.

Eva worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for Black Hawk County. She loved tending to her flowers in front of her home and was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. She was an avid dog lover and frequently took care of her grand dogs. Her most favorite activities were hanging out with her grandchildren and of course - the many trips to her "happy place", the casino.

She is preceded in death by her parents, ex-husband, Elmer Saulsbury, and husband, Richard Monaghan.

Eva is survived by her sons, Pete J. (Rose) Saulsbury of Pittsboro, NC, Kevin A. (Cheree') Saulsbury of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Tyler B. (Nicole) Saulsbury of Waterloo, IA; grandsons, Dusty (Andrea), Cory (Megan), Kyle Saulsbury, Clark Saulsbury, Shane Saulsbury, Clayton Wheeler and Henry Saulsbury; granddaughter, Sophia Murray; great-grandson, D.J. Saulsbury; great-granddaughter, Willow Saulsbury; and siblings, Claus (Monika) Schadle and Karin (Dieter) Nigg of Munich, Germany.

Memorial Gathering: Family to receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Locke in La Porte City, 606 East Main Street, La Porte City.

The Saulsbury-Monaghan Family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to American Legion Post #207.

The family would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Eva's neighbors, Allen and Allison Clark, for their continued support in caring for her during this difficult time.
