Mildred Lorene Foss was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 12, 1928, daughter of William and Nettie (Wright) Conn. She grew up and attended schools in Louisville graduating from Fern Creek High School. After Elwin Foss lost his first wife, Mildred was invited to come to Iowa to help care for his children and to be closer to her sister, Dorothy Poyner. Elwin and Mildred fell in love and were married on June 26, 1948. They farmed during their life together near Dunkerton, Waterloo, Garrison and Dysart, and the family grew with the addition of four more children. Mildred gardened and she and Elwin raised chickens which she would fry to perfection in her iron skillet. Mildred was a faithful church member who sang in church, taught Sunday School and raised her children, along with Elwin, to attend church faithfully and to love the Lord.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elwin in January 2008; and a sister, Dorothy Poyner. She is survived by her 4 sons: Roger (Colleen) Foss of Waterloo, Bill (Sue) Foss of Vinton, Ron Foss of Berea, KY, and Wendell Foss of Manasha, WI; 3 daughters, Sharon (Tom) Drilling of Waterloo, Coleen (Mike) Wagner of Cedar Falls, and Connie Hansen of Independence; 3 sisters, Anna Mae (Newton) Waggoner of Dysart, Marge Taylor of Hudson, and Jean (Verlyn) Krause of Strawberry Point; 14 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Mildred and her sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Western Home Communities.
