Old Dan Tucker returned to Tilford Elementary Thursday evening, continuing a tradition that has been part of the elementary music scene for decades.
"Old Dan Tucker" is part of the second grade music concert each year, as one boy from each class puts on the familiar brown hat and dances and stumbles in front of the others in the class, who musically tell him to "get out of the way."
"I didn't do that song at the beginning, but the kids said, 'We have to do it,'" says Connie Zenk, who has been leading Tilford music and concerts for years. "Now, my husband says we should have a reunion of all the guys who were Dan Tucker."
Other favorite songs made their annual return, as second grade students sang about butterflies ("Tired caterpillar") and birds ("Las mananitas") and America ("Grand Old Flag," "America," "I Love My Country" and "This Land Is Your Land."
The students also sang about music, with songs including "You'll Sing a Song" and "Rhythm Comes to the Rescue."
The event also included the PTO ice cream social and displays of art work by Ms. Otto's art students.
The third grade event took place in March.
The entire class of Tilford Fourth Grade students will present their music program on Monday, April 22 at 6:30.
The first grade students will present their music programs on Thursday, April 25. The first of the two will begin at 6:30 with the second program scheduled for 7:15. Each evening student art work will be on display and the PTO treats all to an Ice Cream Social. Shellsburg fourth graders will also have their concert and art display Thursday, April 25.
