The members of the NCCC Maple 2 team visited the Vinton City Council meeting Thursday night to witness Mayor John Watson sign a proclamation declaring April 9 as the Mayors' Day for Recognition of National Service.
Mayor Watson thanked the volunteers, including AmeriCorps members past and present, for the many hours they have speent helping Vinton area residents, particulary after the flood of 2008 and the wind storm of July 2011.
Mayor Watson joined Maple 2 members on Tuesday for a service day event at the Skate Center, where the NCCC participants spoke to area students about the importance of service.
"When they asked me if I would be involved in this my only request was to be able to tell the community and county about how much volunnteering there has been, including from AmeriCorps, especially after flood and storm," said Mayor Watson, who posed for a photo with the proclamation and Maple 2 members during the council meeting.
Maple 2 is currently working in northern Buchanan County, assisting at the Fontana Park and Nature Center.
