There is, according to the old saying, no such thing as a free lunch.
There is, however, such a thing as free dirt.
However the free dirt is not clean dirt; it's dirty dirt, which means that it's not all dirt. It's dirt with construction debris from the old jail site mixed in.
But if you want it, and if you have a big truck, it's free.
The county has issued the following notice to area residents:
Benton County is giving away waste dirt generated at the site of the Benton County Law Enforcement Center, Vinton, Iowa. There is no charge for the dirt, however interested persons must have a tandem truck to haul the dirt and will be required to sign a damage waiver with the contractor.
