There were more than 500 write-in votes in the Benton County Supervisor balloting in the Republican primary. Most of those were for incumbent Jason Sanders, who originally had planned to not seek re-election, but changed his mind after many constituents urged him to run again.
The exact totals of write-in votes will be tallied when the supervisors canvass the election results next week.
Sanders will be on the November ballot, where he will face Ed Sass for a third time.
The only other unresolved question to be answered in Tuesday's primary campaign is: Did county voters agree with state and district voters in congressional and gubernatorial elections?
The answer is yes, and no. Former Gov. Terry Branstad won in Iowa, and also in Benton County. He received 873 votes from Benton County Republicans, to 793 for Bob Vander Plaats and 100 for Rod Roberts.
Branstad will face incumbent Gov. Chet Culver.
In the Third District Congressional race, however, Benton County Republicans differed significantly from district GOP voters. Brad Zaun won the GOP nomination across the district with 42 percent of the vote. But in Benton County, Zaun received 264 votes, or just over 17 percent. Jim Gibbons was the favorite of county Republicans, getting 565 votes (38 percent). Dave Funk garnered 372 votes (25 percent).
Zaun will challenge Congressman Leonard Boswell in the Third District Congressional race in November.
