Among those receving honors at the 2012 Governor’s Volunteer Award Ceremony from Governor Terry E. Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds were volunteers from the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.

The voluteers received the honor during a special recognition ceremony June 29, in Cedar Rapids.

The Governor’s Volunteer Awards program was created in 1982, with inaugural awards presented in 1983. What began as a small program only available to state government agencies has expanded over the years and now provides all Iowa nonprofit, charitable and government organizations with an easy way to honor their volunteers with a prestigious stat-level recognition award.

“I am v very pleased to honor those who have given the precious gift of their time to make a difference and enrich lives in communities all across Iowa”, said Governor Branstad. “I never tire of meeting volunteers and hearing about the wonderful accomplishments they contribute to making this state great.”

EASTERN IOWA HONOR FLIGHT is a 501 c 3 corporation whose sole function is to fly Veterans to Washington DC to see the monuments erected in their honor and for their sacrifice to make this nation what it is today. Eihonorflight.org is the web site for further information. Many volunteers work year-round organizing three to four flights each year, fund-rasing and taking care of the logistics required to fly 100 veterans -- many of them in wheelchairs -- to Washington, D.C., and give them a tour of the WWII Memorial and other monuments.
