Vinton residents are likely to remember scenes from last July over the next several weeks as they see crews from the Maurer company removing trees that were damaged in the historic storm of 2011.

Crews will be cutting and chipping nearly 500 trees that were damaged during that storm. Drivers are advised to be prepared for some temporary street closings, as crews need room to cut and haul the trees to waiting trucks.

Wood chips available at first dump, when open

Some Vinton Today readers have asked about the availability of wood chips from the trees currently being cut down. City Coordinator Andy Lent said the chips are available at the first dump north of the Cedar River, during open dump hours. Wood will be available later at the former Farmers Sales location between 3rd and 4th Street, just west of the creek. But Lent said conditions are too muddy for residents to enter safely now. He said the city will work with Maurer to set times that residents can pick up firewood. Also, said Lent, the city continues to explore options concerning the sale of the large logs that are being cut now.
