The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is in the process of making some major improvements to Lions Field that should make the facility a top quality facility for many years to come. The major part of the renovation is a complete new infield that should be done by November 4th as long as the weather cooperates. This work is being done by Pace Supply from Fairfax, who is one of the leaders in ball field maintenance. The process includes remove 18 inches of surface and rebuilding with proper infield material, the placing of drain tile in areas that have trouble draining, re-cutting the shape of the infield, restructuring the batters boxes and pitching area and other diamond amenities being corrected.

Funding for this project was made possible by the Softball Players Improvement Fund that players contribute to annually, the Vinton Lions Club and the VPRD Capital Fund. Over the past 30 years the facility has been very fortunate to have been supported by the players and the Lions Club to do projects like this and others including new fencing and backstop, new score shed, irrigation system, concession stand with shade and safe picnic area, playground equipment and new lighting just to name some of the improvements. The facility will also see a new batting cage as a result of the storm in July.

Lions Field has been the site for adult softball teams for many years and has become the field for many youth activities as well. The past few years it has also been the spot to watch adult flag football games in the fall. This facility has been a centerpiece for players and fans throughout the summer to meet and enjoy a leisure time activity and will continue to be a quality facility for those who wish to utilize it. Stop by and check out this new and improved facility next spring and summer.
