On Saturday, September 25th members of the Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton, and Belle Plaine FFA Chapters assisted with the Progressive Ag Safety Day at the Benton County Fairgrounds. The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter taught lawn mower safety and worked with the Garrison Fire Department to teach grain safety. Members led groups around to the different stations, which included Combine Safety, 911, First Aid, ATV Safety, Lawn Mower Safety, PTO/pinch PT., Accident Survivor, Grain Safety, Chemical Safety, and Sun Sense. Clayton McKenna, Gunnar Schminke, Andrew Brummer, and Kail Evans taught about lawn mower safety, while Josh Wiley, Kevin Heckman, and Christopher Fleming worked in cooperation with representatives from the Garrison Fire Department to teach about Grain Safety and what they would do in an emergency when called. The Pork Producers supplied lunch to the kids which consisted of a pork patty, chips, and juice or water. There were roughly 45 kids that attended from 3rd Grade to 6th Grade and the sessions were in 15 minute increments. After talking to some of the kids that attended they all said they really enjoyed Ag Safety Day and that they would do it again.
