The large church wedding was planned, the church reserved, they were ready to go. Everything was going off without a hitch, and then along came the biggest hitch you could imagine. With a stroke of her pen, Governor Reynolds changed their plans.
With the Governor limiting crowds to 10 or less the couple set an example for social distancing. The couple will now be able to name every guest that was at their wedding. The two of them, two sets of parents, and the pastor. Luke and Sarah (Kreutner) Heilman had to uninvite everyone else. The couple carried on with their plans and exchanged vows at the Trinity Lutheran Church, promptly at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21.
Usually, there's a packed house for a wedding to congratulate the couple, but knowing that wouldn't happen another couple in their circle of friends thought that the day shouldn't go unacknowledged. Calling friends of the couple, Paula Happel set about rallying guests to drive to the parking lot, at approximately 11:15. Jim, the other half of the duo called me. "I think people need some good news to talk about."
Gathering in the parking lot while the ceremony was happening inside the church, the crowd formed a semi-circle facing the door of the church. The friends were not going to let the opportunity pass to congratulate the couple on their big day.
About 20 cars waited for the couple to exit the building to wish them well. As they walked out, horns began honking, surprising the couple with the show of love from the crowd. The usual clinking of the glass to garner a kiss from the couple was quickly altered to more honking, and the couple obliged.
As the couple walked to their car, they made a quick decision to stay and wave at everyone as part of their reception line, which should have taken place inside rather than in the chilly 34-degree parking lot. The couple bravely stood outside and waited for the last car to pull out.
Thanks to some friends practicing social distancing, and hoping to keep the sickness part away and wish the couple good health, it won't be a day that will be forgotten.
The couple will be postponing their honeymoon to travel to the Rocky Mountains, hopefully, this summer.
Congratulations Luke and Sarah and here's wishing you both a less eventful happily ever after!
