The Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG) is wrapping up a project at the Shellsburg school. Ryan Davis, principal, supported the group's application for a grant to replace the bridge leading to the restored prairie behind the school. Shellsburg elementary students use the prairie six to ten times a year for educational and recreational activities and the previous bridge crossing a waterway was deteriorating, high maintenance and sometimes unsafe.

Benton County Community Foundation Grant and SACG funds have been used to build a new bridge that can be used by students as well as to get the mowers out to the prairie. It's taller and stronger and will be easier to maintain. SACG members Jay Herman, Lonnie Speckner and Greg Peacock developed plans and led the effort, each donating considerable time to the project. Other SACG members and community volunteers assisted with various phases of the project and it is great to have this completed for the school and community's use!! The bridge is located on the Prairie Forest Trail and there are plans to sponsor some trail and prairie events in the future. Grant funds will also be used to place a sign about the trail and prairie near the school concession stands. It's quite muddy right now, but wood chips from the school's old windbreak are being placed on the trail so feel free to stop by and check it out!
