If you remember back in May we did this story about a man named Larry Ritland, the "Old Cycling Veteran." Larry's goal was to ride across the country and encourage younger veterans to become involved in their local Legion.

Leaving on June 7th from Ocean Shores, Washington, he finished his ride on Sunday, August 18.

Some trivia about the ride from Frank Kruse included these tidbits:The miles ridden were 3.620, in 58 days.  The longest ridden in one day was 93 and the shortest 24 miles.

Larry's made it all the way across the country to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath where his wife Kay dropped him off to finish the last leg of his trip on Saturday. She then headed south, to the Massanutten Resort, near Charlottesville, Virginia to meet up with several family members.

The trip was pretty uneventful until this last leg of the journey.

After arriving at his final stop, he said in his Facebook post that he, "Hit a paver block on a narrow aqueduct passage, didn't get my right foot unclipped in time to avoid a hard fall into a horizontal two-inch pipe, the lower one on kind of a handrail/guardrail along the Towpath. Knocked the wind out of me and I thought that was all."

Being the dedicated rider that he is, he continued on until the end of his trip, arriving in Washington D.C.

The result of his fall sent him away with 3 broken ribs.

If you'll remember the ride was to encourage young veterans to become involved in their area American Legion Post and ending on the Legion's 100th Birthday.

Showing his sense of humor, after a list of hashtags his final tag was, #brokenribshurt
