Martha Long says there are other barn quilts with patterns more intricate than the one she chose for her barn on Highway 150, just across the road from the Vinton Airport.

But, she said, there is none more fitting to remember her parents.

She chose the barn quilt with the title “Card Trick” to honor her parents, Stanley and Ida (Schirm) Geater.

“They loved to play cards,” Long said of her parents.

The barn quilt went up last Friday, said Long.

“I’ve been interested in barn quilts since I first saw them,” she said.

Monica Lursen of Clarksville painted the quilt for the Longs. Lursen has helped start the Butler County Quilt association.

“They have 43 barn quilts up in their county,” said Long. “They are hoping to get a final count of at least 50 barn quilts.”

Long said she has been working with others in the area, including the Benton County Extension Service, on finding a way to get more barn quilts displayed in Benton County.
