Buddy Holly was singing "Peggy Sue" on the radio. Young rock-n-roll listeners were debating what on earth a "Purple People Eater" was when they heard Sheb Wooley's song on the radio.
The cars had huge fins and hood ornaments.
And Vinton had one of the best football teams in the area.
Such was life for the Class of 1960, who gathered in Vinton to remember those years a half-century ago.
They first met at the high school football field on Friday evening, where the successes of the football team in 1958 and 1959 inspired the players of 2010, who won a very close game.
They met again at the home of 1960 graduate Mike Hibbs, and later at the country club.
