The Benton County Sheriff’s Office has completed an investigation that led to the arrest of two Cedar Rapids men on multiple charges.
During the early morning hours of August 15, a deputy on patrol located two people in a vehicle at the cemetery just north of Norway, Iowa. The initial investigation revealed the two subjects had escaped from the Hinzman Center in Cedar Rapids on August 13. The vehicle that they were in was stolen from Cedar Rapids. Justin Michael Coffland and Christopher Scott Lewis were both arrested on warrants issued out of Linn County and transported to the Linn County Jail.
A follow up investigation revealed that both Justin Michael Coffland and Christopher Scott Lewis committed burglaries in the Watkins and Norway area and were responsible for damage at the cemetery done on August 13. Both Coffland and Lewis have been charged with two counts of burglary, both a class D felony; criminal mischief 2nd degree, a class D felony; and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, an aggravated misdemeanor.
Both remain in the Linn County jail. The Hinzman Center is a Linn County Department of Corrections facility.
