Vinton will wait a week, or longer, to learn if it has a new police chief.
The City Council voted, 3-2 in favor of Mayor John Watson's choice, but with one member absent the vote does not represent more than a majority of the total council.
After a months-long process that included input from a consultant and a citizens' committee, Watson selected Eldora Police Chief Ted Paxton from among three finalists.
“He is elated, Watson told the council before the vote. “He is very, very excited about coming and he awaits the council's acceptance of my decision.”
While council member Dave Vermedahl, Ron Elwick and Ron Hessenius voted yes on the mayor's appointment of Paxton, Tami Stark and Zach Parmeter voted no, without commenting on the reason for their vote.
With council member Chris Bendull absent, Watson called a short recess while he spoke to City Attorney Bob Fischer and tried to reach Bendull by phone.
After the recess, Watson announced that he would call a special council meeting next week to address the vacancy. The mayor said it was important to hear from Bendull and the citizens he represents.
Paxton has been police chief in Eldora there since 2007. He began his law enforcement career at Albion in 1997; before joining the Eldora force in 1999. He has also served as a part-time Hardin County deputy for 14 years.
