Eight people entered the 3rd Annual Benton County Farm Bureau Cookout Contest held on Saturday July 24th at the fairgrounds in Vinton. Bill Newton was the organizer of this event. Contestants entered in five different meat grilling categories which included beef, pork, poultry, turkey and combo/specialty.

Those who entered the Cookout Contest were Russ Werning, Steven and Michelle Bruce and Charles Sumner each with a pork recipe; Mark Christy with a beef recipe; Brett Richards with a turkey recipe, Drew Sallee with a combo/specialty recipe and Gene Petersen and Carl Miller each with a poultry recipe.

Gene Petersen was the Grand Champion of the Benton County Farm Bureau Cookout Contest with his poultry entry. First place winners in each meat category are eligible to enter the Iowa Farm Bureau Cookout Contest, with the same recipe, to be held on August 17th at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

The Benton County Farm Bureau would like to thank the people who entered the 3rd Annual Cookout Contest and also this year’s judges Joe Wehage, Tami Stark and Ron Phillips. Congratulations to Gene Petersen for earning the Grand Champion Award and good luck to those from Benton County who choose to compete at the Iowa State Fair.
