News : Boy dies of injuries suffered in pond incident near Atkins

The Atkins Fire Department and Benton County Sheriff’s Office were called to man-made pond located at the east edge of Atkins around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14 for a report of a missing 13 year old boy in the water. Atkins firefighters located the child shortly thereafter in about 10 foot of water. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids and then transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

The boy, identified at Brandon Vogt age 13 of RR Atkins, died at U of I hospitals Thursday morning.

Brandon and three other individuals were playing in and near the pond in a small boat approximately 50-60 foot from shore when Brandon jumped into the water and disappeared. Other kid’s in the boat jumped in to help but were unable to locate him.
