Benton County Democrats to meet April 16

The monthly meeting of the Benton County Democrats will be held on April 16, 2019 at the LaReyna Restaurant in Vinton on 4th Street. The meeting will be held at 7:00pm but come early to enjoy the great Mexican food. Anyone interested in electing Democrats to office is invited to attend. We will be planning for the Benton County Fair and area parades.

March 26, 2019The Benton County Board of Supervisors met in regular adjourned session with Supervisors Primmer, Bierschenk and Seeman present. Primmer called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Unless otherwise noted, all actions were approved unanimously.Seeman moved/Bierschenk seconded: To approve the minutes from March 19, 2019.

Vinton Municipal Electric Utilities requests proposals

The Vinton Municipal Electric Utility (VMEU) is requesting proposals for the following to assist the utilityin building a Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) build-out in Vinton, Iowa. The intent of the Owner is to buildthis network in its entirety during the 2019 construction season.The proposed network will be direct buried, passing approximately 2,200 homes ultimately, and willrequire an initial build of approximately 82 miles (40 miles of mainline and 42 miles of drop-line)composed of fiber optic cable.

This week, many bills were voted on and passed on the House floor. We strengthened the laws for cruelty to animals with House File 737, as there have been studies showing people who torture pets are more likely to commit violence against people.House File 692 was passed which will improve the way absentee ballots are counted legally.

City qualifies to receive funding to Construct Wetland Basin

In an effort to control flooding in the city of Vinton in the southern end of town, the city of Vinton a member of the Middle Cedar Watershed Management Authority, has qualified to receive funding from the Housing and Urban Development Disaster Resilience Competition. The above drawing is an idea of what the project could look like.

Resident wins favor of the council, only to lose it again

In a case brought to the council, which originated over a complaint of the construction of a fence and also because of work he was performing on his home, Blake Benson of 615 E. 6th St., Vinton, has been cited for failure to obtain a permit to build.In documents shown to the council, the civil citation would cost Benson a $500.
