Another totally fun and enjoyable day is in store at Garrison’s annual Fun Day Celebration on Saturday, July 13. This event is also the community’s annual celebration. Like last year, the newly renovated city park will be the center of activity for the day.

The day begins with the Howard Schoonover Memorial and Cancer Awareness Poker Run Fundraiser with Registration at the Hitchin’ Post at 8 AM a.m. and departure at 9 AM. Proceeds will be donated to the Survivors of Benton County. Entry fee is $10 per rider. For information call Joe at 319-560-3733.

Activities at the park begin at 2 p.m. with the KidsZone till from 2 pm to 4:30 p.m. The Health and Safety Circus starts at 2 p.m., the first 50 kids will receive a goodie bag. The following organizations will be in attendance: Benton County Sheriff, Old Creamery Nature Trail, Lions Club, North Benton Ambulance, Garrison Library, Operation Lifesaver, Horizons, Hawk-I, Vinton Fire Department, Vinton FFA Petting Zoo, Benton County Conservation, Garrison Emergency Services, Farm Safety for Just Kids, ISU Extension, REC, Benton County Public Health, Virginia Gay Hospital, Aulds’ Llamas, Mr. Shucks from Cedar Rapids Kernals and Face painting. The V/S Cheer Team will provide a minicamp at 3:30 p.m. and at 4:15 p.m. Vinton Tae Kwon Do will have a demonstration. Additional giveaway items, including bikes and helmets, were donated by the following: Pioneer, Iowa Association for Justice, Vinton Family Medical Clinic, Cedar Rapids Roughriders, Vinton Parks and Rec, Mary Vogt, Bloomsbury Farm, Super $1 store, Air Gas, Fisher Towing, Theisens, Clingmans, Pizza Hut, LaGranges, Subway, McDonalds, Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, American Lung Association, MADD, American Heart Association, Christy Chiropractic, Paul’s Seed, US Bank, Ehlingers, Betterton Chiropractic, The Golden Comb and Palace Theater. Admission to the KidsZone is a free will donation; all proceeds will benefit the Garrison Park Project hosted by the GBC Park Fund Committee.

At 2 PM a bags tournament will get underway at the park. Registration is $10.

The 6th Annual Garrison Car Cruise will be held at 5 PM with registration from 2- 4 PM. Registration is $10. For the first time, this year there will be cash prizes along with trophies, thanks to the support of local donors. The awards will be presented after the cruise for the following categories Best Ford, Best GM, Best Dodge and Best of Show. For more information on the car cruise contact Steve Ary at 477-8148.

The annual dance and barbeque will once again be held at the Park under a big-top tent. So rain or shine, all festivities will go on. The pork barbeque begins at 5:00 PM. The dance follows from 8:00 PM. to midnight, with music provided by the popular live band “Route 66.” Admission is Tickets are $10 for the hog roast & dance or $5 for the dance only.

Garrison Fun Day is sponsored by the Garrison Emergency Services Foundation, The Hitchin’ Post and the GBC Park Committee. The Garrison Emergency Services Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization serving the needs of the Garrison Fire Department, Garrison First Responders and Garrison Emergency Services Auxiliary also assist with the event. All proceeds of the foundation are used for improvements to the Garrison Emergency Services and ongoing costs of disaster recovery.
