Events and Activities : HOW ONE-ROOM SCHOOLS GREW KIDS AND COMMUNITIES, AT CENTER POINT MUSEUM JULY 31

It's been almost three-quarters of a century since there were one-room schools in Eastern Iowa. But many families still have cherished--if sometimes factually challenged, as in "I walked four miles to school uphill both ways"--stories of the old country schools.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, the Center Point Historical Society Depot Museum will offer a free program on those legendary rural schools.

"One-Room Schools: Growing Iowa Kids and Communities" will be presented by Ann Cejka, Program Coordinator at Ushers Ferry Historic Village in Cedar Rapids.

Ann will remind us of all the responsibilities the country schoolhouse had besides schoolin'-- like being the polling place, the enlistment center, the entertainment venue--and about the responsibilities of running what was the smallest, most immediate, unit of government in the U.S.

Ann's talk will be followed by lemonade, cookies, and conversation about those beloved old schools.
