The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II and Central Region met at 11:30 am August 26, 2015 at the Pizza Ranch for lunch. Nine members attend the lunch and meeting, Anne Dake was the hostess for the month of August.
President Fran Stueck called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Conservation Pledge.
Secretary Joyce Bratten gave the roll call with question of “name a edible flower”.
Joyce than read the minutes from the last meeting.
Treasurer Sharen Stueck gave the treasurer's report.
Correspondence:
A thank you note from Julienne Bramer for having her to be one of the flower show judges.
A thank you note to Fran and Ted for attending Loretta Daisy reception July 21st in Fort Dodge.
A thank you note to Kelly from the library for the flowers on Garden Week.
Committee Reports:
Cards: Anne: members signed a card for Cam Wood
Garden Therapy: Luanna, club has garden therapy September 9, 2015 Wed, 2:30 at the Lutheran Home, also reported on the therapy at the Annex on July 8. Eight club members, Luanna Hawkins, JoEllen Krug, Anne Dake, Michelle Gibson, Sharen Stueck, Susie Hansen, Fran Stueck and Rosie Boisen took flowers from their gardens and helped residents make small flower arrangements for their rooms. The residents and club members all had a great time.
Unfinished business:
Members still need to find a day and go to Tilford, Blue star marker and Schrebring flower beds and pull weeds and deadhead plants. Some places need to have mulch put down.
Club also still need to go out to the roadside park on 218 by LaPorte and paint the posts and the building.
The Central Region Convention is coming soon. October 3-5 at the Hotel Kirkwood. The club needs to help on those 3 days.
On July 13 the club members Sharen, Susie, Fran, Michelle, Luanna and Rosie toured JoEllen Krug flower gardens and then went over to Frans gardens.
The flower show was a big success, weather was beautiful, we had 49 exhibitors and 225 entries in Horticulture which was up 7 exhibitors and 16 exhibits from 2014. In Design there were 8 exhibitors and 35 entries, up from 2014 2 exhibitors and down 3 exhibits. The youth division: Horticulture 29 exhibitors and 54 exhibits. In 2014 26 exhibits and 11 exhibitors.
New Business:
Fran told members to be thinking about programs we'd like to hear next year and places we'd like to visit or see. Dues are due next month plus program planning for 2016.
Next meeting will be at Ray House with Bob Moen giving a tour of the home. Connie McClintock is hostess.
Rosie said she'd like to have the club meeting for November.
Club thanked Anne for being hostess.
Kelly Kaut then had a very interesting program, “Eating Your Bouquet.” A list of flowers that are edible, also the ones that are poison to eat. How she dipped the flowers or petals egg whites and then sugar, for color she put jello in the sugar. Really neat.
