Pressure canners with a dial-type pressure gauge should be tested each year for accuracy. Rachel Wall, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Nutrition and Health Specialist, will be offering testing of dial gauge pressure canners. Following are the dates and times this service will be offered during the summer of 2014.

* June 10 (Tuesday) – Benton County Extension Office, 501 1st. Ave., Vinton – 9:00 to 11:00 AM, Phone: 319-472-4739

To have a dial-gauge canner tested, bring the canner lid only--the entire canner is not needed. The pressure gauge and all vents and openings in the lid will be checked for proper functioning. It is not necessary to test weighted or rocker-type pressure regulators because they cannot be adjusted and will usually remain accurate. All-American and Burpee models cannot be tested.

If you are unavailable at the scheduled time but would like a canner lid tested, you may take the canner lid to a test site ahead of the scheduled time and pick it up after the scheduled time. No appointment is needed; just arrive with your dial gauge pressure canner lid. This service at these times is available for no cost.
