Vinton, IA—Vinton Area Ministerial Alliance is partnering with AmeriCorps
NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team Oak 1 to host “Science Run for
Fun” to be held at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Track on Saturday, July
17, 2010. There will be a ½ mile, 1 mile, and a 5k race making it an event
friendly to all ages! Registration opens at 7am and the fun begins at 8am!
The goal of “Science Run for Fun” is to promote healthy lifestyle choices
and educate children about the functions of the human body. At 8:15am, a
variety of informational and interactive booths will provide insight on ways
the body functions, what to do in case of emergency, how to monitor blood
pressure levels, and what foods our bodies need to work to their best
abilities. The Cedar Rapids Science Station will be providing fun hands-on
activities for kids! Refreshments will be provided.
In lieu of a registration fee, race participants are asked to donate school
supplies. All proceeds will be donated to the Vinton-Shellsburg Community
School District. So save the date- and make sure you and your family marks
the “Science Run for Fun” on your summer activity calendar! For more

Oak 1 is currently working at the Cedar Rapids Science Station, a science
day camp for children grades Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth, to assist
teachers in the instruction of science classes. The team is helping the
center, located in the Lindale Mall, with developing curriculum and planning
activities for the classroom topics, as well as assisting with Before Care
and After Care programs.
The NCCC team previously worked with Habitat for Humanity in the final
construction phase of six homes in Des Moines, Iowa. The team also worked
with lowernine.org and community volunteers on rebuilding the Lower Ninth
Ward of New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, as
well assisting the maintenance department of the Flat Rock River YMCA Camp
in St. Paul, Indiana with preparations for summer volunteers. Most recently,
the team assisted the city of Beatrice, Nebraska with the clearing of trees
and brush from the banks of the Big Blue River in order to make the river
more accessible to the public.
