4th Annual Flower Pot Challenge & BBQ with North Benton Ambulance

  Windsor Manor Assisted Living is gearing up for our Annual Flower Pot Challenge!   Area businesses and individuals are asked to put together a creative flower pot that showcases your business or personality and bring it to Windsor Manor by Friday, May 27th.  Your flower pot will be judged by the residents of Windsor Manor and remain on display throughout the summer.

2nd annual Summer Webinar Series: Garden Natives & Invasives 2011 at Extension

  The Iowa Master Gardener program will offer the second annual Summer Webinar Series: Garden Natives & Invasives 2011. Iowa State University Extension county offices are hosting these gardening webcast programs. Please note that the nearest participating location is the Benton County Extension Office, which is located at 501 1st Ave.

Prescription Drug Disposal in Belle Plaine Tomorrow

The prescription drug drive will offer FREE disposal of all unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, April 30th from 10-12 pm at the Belle Plaine City Hall flyer

Crop Scouting Competition for Iowa Youth

We are pleased to announce the upcoming 2011 Iowa Crop Scouting Competitions.   The competitions will be held in late July/early August.  High school students (those completing grades 9?12) who have used the Scouting Curriculum from across Iowa are invited to compete and showcase their scouting abilities in corn and soybean fields.

Iowa State Fair Grandstand, Admission Tickets on Sale Saturday

  Tickets for the much-anticipated Iowa State Fair Grandstand shows go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. through all Ticketmaster outlets. The 2011 line-up is presented by U.S. Cellular. In addition to the previously-announced star-studded line-up, Gavin DeGraw will open for Train and Maroon 5. DeGraw is known for numerous chart-toppers like "In Love With A Girl" and "I Don't Want To Be.

Handgun Safety Class being offered

  A new law which went into effect on January 1, 2011 requires the Sheriff of each county to issue a permit to carry weapons to any person 21 years of age or older who is not addicted to alcohol, not likely to use a weapon unlawfully or in such a manner as would endanger the person’s self or others, is not a felon, and has not been convicted of a serious or aggravated misdemeanor in the past three years.

Help for Adults Transitioning to College Life

  Kirkwood Admissions office hosts New Adult Learner Welcome Day, May 4; event designed to dispel myths about returning to college.   Kirkwood Community College will hold a reception for adults who are planning to return to college or start for the first time. The free event is set for Wednesday, May 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 125, Iowa Hall on Kirkwood’s main Cedar Rapids campus.

Master Gardeners plan May 14 Extravaganza

       On your shoes or under your fingernails, it is dirt. In a gardener’s hands, it is soil. Iowa gardeners are anxiously awaiting the chance to get their hands into that soil, and the Benton County Master Gardeners are here to help.      Benton County Master Gardeners will hold their 2011 Extravaganza, “The Art of Gardening” on Saturday, May 14 at First Lutheran Church, 1523 Sunset Dr.

Easter Egg Hunts Saturday at Riverside and Rodger's Parks

     Tomorrow, Saturday April 23, at 10 a.m. the Easter Bunny will be coming to Riverside Park to help the Vinton Kiwanis Club with their annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Bunny will be bringing along Free Colored Eggs and Candy for ages 10 and under and will be available for photos at 9:00 a.m.! The Kiwanis Club has been organizing this event for more than an half century.
