Shellsburg American Legion will hold Honor Guard Ceremony on Memorial Day
The Shellsburg American Legion will be doing a brief Honor Guard ceremony at the Shellsburg Oakwood Cemetery on Memorial Day, May 25 at 11:00 am. The ceremony will honor the 75th Commemoration of the End of World War II. The official date is September 2, 2020. The public is invited and will be asked to stay in their cars to stay safe during this difficult time.
2020 Benton County Shelter in Relay For Life: More Important Than Ever
In the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic, data and statistics have become very important.

Nancy Baldwin to celebrate Birthday
On Friday, May 22, Nancy Baldwin will be celebrating her 85th birthday with a Drive-by Reception from 6-7 p.m. Be sure to give a honk and wave! Memorial Day Activities Canceled in Vinton
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the George G. Luckey Post 57 of the American Legion has canceled all events normally held for Memorial Day. The Legion will put up the large flags at the three cemeteries but no services will be held. Small flags on veteran’s graves will not be placed this year as the State level of the Legion made the decision to not place small flags on veteran’s graves at the veteran’s cemeteries, so we are following their lead in not doing it here as well.
Historic Preservation Month celebrating historic places, stories behind them
May is Historic Preservation Month.Tired of being cooped up? Take a beautiful Benton County road trip! Get out of the house, hop in the car or pickup, and check out the local historically significant places that matter to us. You could make it a group caravan, practicing safe distancing, and educational for kids craving get out and about. Hey, gas is a bargain these days, and the weather’s nice!The first stop might be the Benton County courthouse, 1903-built architectural gem listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Boomtown is out, Boom-Fest is in, so far
At this point we are continuing to make plans to hold Boom-Fest on Saturday, August 29 as scheduled. We hope you will find this to be great news!This year’s event will definitely include some changes. Some possibilities include spreading vendors out more to allow for more space in between booths, having hand sanitizer stations available, one-way shopper flow and a few other things.
Parade for Norval Staton's 87th Birthday on Saturday
In honor of Norval Staton's 87th birthday, there will be a parade to help him celebrate. Most of you know him as the guy that mowed the lawn or trimmed your trees. Norval has been retired for several years now but he still enjoys seeing everyone. Line up will start Saturday, May 16th at 1:40 pm in the Tilford Elementary School parking lot and the parade will starts at 2:00 pm.
Benton County Relay For Life: New Plan to Honor, Remember, and Raise Funds
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Benton County was scheduled to take place on
May 29th. Due to COVID-19, it will now be Shelter in Relay for Life on Sunday, June 7th on
National Cancer Survivors Day. With the spread of COVID-19, cancer patients are more
vulnerable than ever. The American Cancer Society needs everyone’s support to continue its
lifesaving cancer programs and research.
Scoop the Loop on Friday May 1 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
We invite Vinton and the surrounding communities to join us Friday, May 1 from 6:30-7:30 pm to Scoop the Loop! Everyone MUST stay in their vehicles and we must follow ALL the traffic laws (no riding in the back of pickups, stop at stop signs as it’s not a parade). But the weather is suppose to be great and we’re hoping everyone can have their windows down and wave their hearts out to our fellow community members.
