The Smith-Geater Post 8884 and Auxiliary will be holding their annual Patriot's Pen Youth Essay Competition.

Any Middle school students in grades 6th-8th, from the area, are eligible to enter the contest. There is an opportunity to win cash prizes into thousands of dollars in national awards.

The Patriot's Pen writing contest began in 1995 as a way to encourage young people to learn about and write about American history. The essay must be 300-400 words in length and be on the topic, "What is Patriotism to Me?"

Students work their way up the competition by beginning at the local Post. The winners then advance to the District and on to the State competition. The first place winners at the State level, will compete for prize money at the National level as well as an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C.

The competition is tough with over 125,000 students who participate nationwide. The deadline to compete is October 31, 2020. Any interested students and teachers should contact the local VFW Post 8884 by remaining the Post at cdr.post8884@gmail.com for more information.
